The Photography of Industry exhibition is a result of a cooperation between the Chair of Photography at the Zagreb Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Zagreb City Museum on the Project Zagreb Industrial Heritage: History, State of Affairs, Outlook. The initiating motive was to enrich the Museum collection with contemporary photographs of documentary and artistic value and to give opportunities for young artists to exhibit their works. As laid out in the objectives of the Project, the exhibition is trying to alter the perception of industrial heritage to that of a part of local, national and universal heritage, integral to a European identity and an important segment of the development of civilisation.
Works of the Photography students thematically relate to the City Slaughterhouse and the Cattle Market Complex, an extraordinary example of modern industrial architecture from the interwar period, which is protected historic unit. Built between 1928 and 1931, the Slaughterhouse is situated in a part of Zagreb which, for over one hundred years, had been intended for industrial entrepreneurship development. During the last decade operation of the factory plants was diminished and ceased in number of cases. The former South-Eastern periphery, which was characterized by typical features of an industrial landscape, was exposed to an urban metamorphosis, intense construction activities and transformation of the buildings’ original use.
Throughout the entire academic year students enrolled on a graduate studies in Photography learned about Zagreb industrial heritage during the interwar period. After introductory lectures and a field trip to various sites, the classes mentored by Sandra Vitaljić and Jelena Blagović continued and individual student projects were developed. The Slaughterhouse was selected by all the students as the leading topic of their artistic research, which resulted in a wide variety of photographic series.
Students: Siniša Glogoški, Luka Kedžo, Davor Konjikušić, Ana Mihalić, Marko Miščević, Tomislav Može, Petra Mrša, Neven Petrović, Borko Vukosav and Nikola Zelmanović.
The heritage became an inspiration and initiative for artistic expression. Through this group exhibition, works receive a new dimension and contribute to the rising of collective awareness and unveil part of a forgotten past when Zagreb was one of the leading industrial cities in South-Eastern Europe.
