Photographic albums of the 19th century are one of the most valuable parts of the Collection of Photographs, Picture Postcards and Photographic Accessories of Zagreb City Museum. As well as telling of the early reception of the medium of photography in Zagreb, and the high quality of photographs taken, they are also an outstandingly worthwhile document of the city’s history.
The exhibition presents a selection of photographs from nine albums, covering the period from 1864 to 1895. From the oldest, with the photographs of Ludwig Schwoiser, to the most recent, the photographic credits for which go to Ivan Standl, the albums show the historical buildings, the urban development between the two general urban plans of 1865 and 1887, the consequences of the great earthquake, newly built structures, economic activity and life on the city squares, thus providing a broad image of the development of the town and its vicissitudes.
Also shown at the exhibition is one of the first photographic monographs of Croatia, in which two pictures are devoted to Zagreb, the author being Ivan Standl, one of the most active Zagreb photographers of the second half of the 19th century, as evidenced by his authorship of five of the nine albums featured.
The photographs are accompanied by texts in Croatian
and English.
