Zagreb City Museum, in association with the Maksimir Culture and Information Centre, an exhibition from the cycle Photography and the Young
Project head: Vesna Leiner
Zagreb City Museum, in conjunction with its fundamental activities – the collection, study and presentation of material, also carries out a number of other important communications, one of which is communicating with visitors, particularly the youngest – schoolchildren, our most frequent visitors. The education department of the museum, as well as the guided tours department, is charged with communications with young visitors. Its assignment is through the various projects, workshops, exhibitions and other campaigns, to attract as many young people as possible to the museum.
Zagreb City Museum collects varied items of the material and intangible heritage that tells of the past of the city of Zagreb, which it presents through its collections and exhibitions. One of the most important and numerous of museum collections is the photographic collection, in which photographs since the very beginning of the art (the first half of the 19th century) are held.
Photography has always been a medium used to record, report on and document reality. To record the moment, to transmit messages, awaken feelings, prompt considerations about the reality in which it was created, as well as to tell about its creator. Apart from the initial role in information, over the course of time, artistic form also developed. It is this that is one of the reasons for the organisation of the photograph salon called Photography and the Young; there is another reason, not less important consideration, that of education and teaching. We want to acquaint the young with photography as a resource for self-expression and thus to stimulate their emotional and visual reflections.
The second exhibition from this cycle has the title Zagreb Yards. City yards have become an everyday topic among our town planners and competent municipal institutions. Once, in the not so distant past, they were places for gathering and just being, for family and neighbours.
The photography salon has involved schoolchildren from the senior classes of Zagreb elementary schools. The expert jury, composed of eminent art photographers and museum expert, has chosen the best of the pieces, which are presented at the exhibition.
